Andrea's Irresistible, scream hard-Corr
fans in Taiwan Two things are readily apparent about the Taiwanese - they have really strong arms, and a fetish for backs. One back in particular impressed them - Andrea Corr's. From the moment the youngest of The Corr siblings took centrestage at their showcase at the Taipei One-O-One club, the browned-eyed beauty's back-baring halter top drew the loudest screams. Attention-lover that she is, she flashed flesh at every opportunity so she could bask in more yells from the 4,000 strong crowd like a little girl. In fact, there was no real need for her to sing - all she had to do was to stand, back facing the audience, and say xie xie (thank you in Mandarin) occasionally. As for the arms, the obliging crowd had been briefed by red-haired DJ "Ah La" to wave their "Corr card" in unison. They did it while chanting the Chinese equivalent of the group's name - Ke er! Ke er! Which at some points, made the concert look a little - or actually a lit - like a Tiananmen Square demonstration, especially since they did not stop once during the 50-minute showcase. Some even opened umbrellas to reach greater heights. About 10,000 had received tickets with The Corrs' latest album, In Blue. Organisers had expected about 2,000 to show up at the dance club, which was, literally, in the middle of nowhere - in good traffic conditions it was almost an hour away from town. But some had queued outside the club since 9am for the 7.30pm showcase to get as close to The Corrs as possible. Armed with glow sticks, banners (one covered with the words "We're from Canada") and CD inlays, the first floor of the club was packed, and all were duly rewarded. The Corr sisters entered dressed to kill. Huge airplane propellors turned at the stop of the stage, obviously borrowed from the music video. They sang new tunes that have already become familiar favourites and weaved in a couple of older hits. About midway, Jim on guitars, broke into a twangy riff that reeked of Don't Dream It's Over, which had the audience baffled for a moment, until Andrea burst into What Can I Do. It turns out that the song was produced by Mitchell Froom, who had produced the Crowded House classic. They also played, among other tracks, All The Love In The World, Runaway, Irresistible - the second single to be released, and No More Cry - a slightly rockish track written by Caroline for their father, when The Corrs lost their mother last year. Punctuating scream-inducing violin and
drum solos by Sharon and Caroline, streamers and confetti rained down
on the crowd, who, hailing from the Land Of All Things Cute, were obviously
thrilled. By the time Andrea finish the "final" song,
Radio, and left the stage with her sisters and brother, the crowd -
arms not the least tired from the co-ordinated waving - was not quite
ready to leave, but could not quite get the word 'encore" out in unison. And no, she did not forget the second verse this time.
